Thesis
Looking after yourself
Writing a thesis is hard. These practical tips help many students.
This page is general information, not medical advice.
When stress builds up
- Break work into tasks you can finish in under an hour.
- Write down tomorrow's first task before you stop for the day.
- Keep regular sleep and meal times, especially near deadlines.
- Talk to your supervisor early if a deadline looks unrealistic — extensions are common.
Avoiding burnout
- Set working hours and a clear end to the day.
- Take at least one full day off each week.
- Notice warning signs: constant tiredness, dread, or losing interest in things you enjoy.
- Celebrate small milestones, like a finished figure or section.
Feeling isolated
- Join or start a writing group for weekly check-ins.
- Work alongside others in a 'Write together' session.
- Keep one non-thesis activity with other people each week.
- Share progress with friends or family in plain language.
Talk to someone
Most universities offer free, confidential counselling for students. Look for "counselling" or "student wellbeing" on your university website or ask your graduate office. If you feel unsafe or in crisis, contact your local emergency services right away.
